We welcome you to the venue of the training, the House of Peace at Uppsala Castle, in the hometown of Mr Dag Hammarskjöld, Uppsala the “City of Peace”.
Being the “old” capital of Sweden and a high seat of Nordic aseir mythology, Uppsala enjoys a long and rich history and its inhabitants “Uppsalabor”, considers their city the cultural capital of Sweden. In “Old Uppsala”, one can find the famous “Uppsala högarna”; tombs of Viking Kings of old and in the largest Cathedral in Scandinavia “Domkyrkan”, one can find the father of the Swedish nation buried, King Gustaf Vasa.
But Uppsala is so much more than tombs, why there are so many great names buried here is due to our city’s tradition of generating great men and women, serving not only Sweden but mankind and our common civilisation alike. This is much due thanks to Uppsala University, the first university in Sweden and the oldest in all of Scandinavia, founded in 1477. Apart from alumni such as Dag Hammarskjöld and Carl von Linné the university can boost with 8 nobel laurets and a long list of Swedish politicians, civil-servicemen and scientists i.a.
In modern time, Sweden has no war heroes, but we have a lot of peace heroes, of which many were groomed here in Uppsala. This is a tradition that the Dag Hammarskjöld Youth Leader Training aims to contribute to with its programme and we welcome you to our small but great city, the “City of Peace”.
